In 2023, significant enhancements were introduced to the annual ‘Over the Line’ tournament, helmed by Sean Millet. This year’s event marked a collaborative effort between our organizers and two key partners: Long Beach Fire and Orange County’s Local 3631. Additionally, a notable shift in the event’s location saw it hosted at Belmont Shores, a change that was met with enthusiastic reception, echoing Dave Moorman’s sentiment: ‘It’s all good.’
This year’s tournament boasted an impressive roster of 12 participating teams, including a notable representation from LBFD. The climatic conditions were exceptionally favorable, and the venue choice proved impeccable. The competition format commenced with pool play, during which each team engaged in a series of four games, leading up to the intense single-elimination playoff stage.
A striking blend of seasoned veterans and newcomers graced the event, providing a refreshing diversity of talent and skill. When the dust had settled, the championship clash materialized between ‘The Royal Firefighters’—comprising Zack Collins (105A), Nick Murphy (FS7), and Jeff Harris (Glendale FD)—and the formidable ‘La Flama Blanca,’ represented by Joe Cunningham, Jared Musacchio, and Keith Castillo (FS33). In a thrilling extra inning, ‘La Flama Blanca’ secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
I extend my sincere appreciation to LBFD Engineer Jimmy Smith, who played a pivotal role in orchestrating the tournament. His efforts culminated in a generously donated lunch, courtesy of Jimmy John’s, and a delightful post-tournament gathering at Legends on 2nd Street. Anticipation is already building for next year’s edition, with hopes of an expanded representation from LAFD, Orange County, and Long Beach teams.
Special thanks are owed to Brett, Davis, Tommy Czubek (LAFD Retired), and all other contributors who were instrumental in ensuring the tournament’s success. In addition, I look forward to welcoming you to this year’s California Firefighter Summer Games, scheduled for the week of June 23 in San Diego, with the ‘Over the Line’ tournament set to take place on June 24 at Mariners Point. Your support and participation are highly encouraged and greatly appreciated.
