Dear Editor,
My husband and I would like to thank the LAFD and especially Station 64 for their love and support. My husband, Austin Herrington (LAFD firefighter) went in to the hospital on March 7th and was found to have Guillain Barre Syndrome. The station organized a meal delivery for our family and so many stations stepped up to volunteer. He is currently in recovery and we would like to thank everyone for all their love and support. We cannot thank you all enough.
Thanks,
Hillary and Austin Herrington

Dear LAFRA –
Please accept my grateful thanks for the most unexpected gift that arrived after the passing of my dad, Jerry Andrew. The beautifully encased flag that was flown over Fire Station 93 following a ceremony for my dad is now a treasured family heirloom. He loved the LAFD and all the many men he worked with over his thirty years on the job. My dad would be humbled and honored.
On behalf of myself, my husband Wes, and dad’s three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, please accept my donation to the Widows, Orphans and Disabled Firemen’s Fund in loving memory of my dad – Jerold Andrew, my mom – Betty Lou Andrew and my brother – Scott Andrew.
With warm regards,
Jill (Andrew) Moody, proud LAFD daughter

To whom it may concern;
This donation is given in loving memory of our Uncle Carroll Hopkins. We were truly blessed by his love for many years. It seems to me that Uncle Carroll was always either on crutches or with a walker until he got his scooter. Uncle Carroll always had smile on his face and a fun story to share. He never complained about his situation. I truly admired him for his positive outlook on life. Our Uncle Carroll will be missed tremendously.
We thank you for your service and dedication in helping the disabled firemen.
God Bless,
Cecil and Cristy Crawford

Hi Andy,
I would like this donation to the Widows and Orphans to go for the memory of Carroll Hopkins. I’ve known him for years, as we went to school together.

To LAFRA
The family and friends of William A. Burnidge wish to thank all those that made our father’s memorial on 3/11/14 so wonderful. Everyone was so kind and helpful at this most difficult time. Special thanks to the staff at the Firefighter’s Museum, as well as the bagpiper.
We would especially like to thank Fire Chaplain Danny Leon for his most inspiring and comforting words. We thank all the fire crews at both the memorial as well as the graveside for helping us to honor our father.
In honor of our father’s memory, please accept these donations from family and friends. Once again, it was a pleasure meeting all of you and being surrounded by the LA City Fire Department family.
Thank you,
Sherrie L. Threatt

LAFRA:
Please accept this donation to the Widows, Orphans and Disabled Firemen’s Fund in memory of Jack Rein. It was my pleasure and honor to take part in the planning and then the festivities of his 100th birthday party earlier this year at Fire Station 87.
What a wonderful life – I want to be just like Jack when I grow up! I only met the man once, but to learn his life’s story and to be able to share it with Grapevine readers was certainly a privilege. Coming of age during the Great Depression, serving in World War II, a distinguished LAFD career – all these and more characterized Jack Rein and fellow members of the “greatest generation.” Surrounded and supported by a loving family until the very end, Jack was a hero to them and should be an inspiration for us all.
Sincerely,
Dave Wagner, LAFD retired

Jim Dolan,
I want to express my sincere and heartfelt thanks to you and the Relief Association for all you have done to honor and recognize my later father, retired Captain Jack Rein. You made the funeral service for him extra special and I have received numerous positive comments from those who were there. Everyone was impressed and a bit awestruck by the level of participation that the Fire Department displayed. This includes me.
I was expecting a nice showing, but the combination of having E-43 present, the bag piper, and yourself to present the encased flag was more than I had ever expected. I also have to comment on the 1945 letter from my dad to the Association that you read. The fact that the Relief Association has managed to keep this letter for almost 70 years is truly amazing. This letter was not from the President or from some general. It was from an Army sergeant who just wanted to thank the Association for sending him some magazines when he was overseas. The fact that someone decided to keep the letter and put it in a file where it was stored for seven decades so it could be retrieved now is a testament to how much the Relief Association really does care about its members and their families.
My dad was always very proud of being part of the LAFD and he was a longtime supporter of the Widows and Orphans Fund. I intend to continue that tradition and make a donation in his name.
Again, many thanks to you and the Relief Association.
Sincerely,
Neal Rein
