I was Chief Lucas’ “Aide” in the early eighties.
He was a soft spoken leader who was a mentor and roll model.
Chief Lucas expected his Officers to work hard, train and motivate their personnel. Perhaps this was due his life experience in the oil fields of Louisiana and as a combat Marine.
One of his many accomplishment was the procurement and restoration of the Gorder Water Tower fire apparatus. This was a major task spearheaded by Bob Munoa. This apparatus sits proudly in the museum at Fire Station 27 as a tribute to Chief Lucas, the members of Fire Station 12, Battalion 2 and the other Stations that volunteered there time and effort.
Chief, I thank you for putting up with me and the many heart to heart conversations we had in the sedan.
I will always be grateful.
Rest in peace my boss.
