“GI Joe” as he was named in Battalion11. Chief Lockwood was the BC on the “B” platoon in B11 when I was a rookie (I was on the “A” with BC Bill Collins) in 1977/78. Lockwood was a big baritone guy and was pretty intimidating to Captais. He was very friendly to firemen though…just like Wilmington. He was a BC during a time when members respected the rank, didn’t bad mouth the officer at the kitchen table…along with Captains. During all my years as a Chief officers Driver aide, Adjutant, Staff Assistant and what ever they call them now, Lockwood was respected by his piers and the rank and file…I am sure there were a few that didn’t care for his management style.
The 1970’s were a good era for the LAFD because of the experience of the BC’s in emergency operations.
RIP GI JOE
