I worked with Captain Sorey as a rookie, at old 4’s in 1975.
One morning between shifts I was pouring coffee in the kitchen and he looked up at me and asked “where are you from kid”? I said , Sir I was born in the island of Guam but I was raised in Los Angeles. He said, Guam ? I was stationed there in WWII. I asked him what year and he said 1945. I looked him in the eye and yelled out, Dad???
His eyes got big and yelled back No! No! It wasn’t me!!
I started laughing so hard my gut hurt. I enjoyed working for him and his sense of humor.

I am so sorry to learn of your passing. You were truly one of the good guys and you will be missed. Probably the most funny Jim Sorey I remember was at old F.S. 56’s. Jim would drive his dune buggy in from Orange County. His relief on the A shift was an old time dispatcher from the Westlake Signal office and those guys developed strange sleep habits. The A shift captain didn’t like to get up at 6:30 AM at change of shift. Jim would complain about to no end. The station was small and Jim wanted to get into his locker and get ready for the new day. Finally Jim would drive his dune buggy up on the front porch of the station at relief and rev up the engine right next to the bedroom window. I can’t remember what finally out come was but I do remember lots of fowl words between the two individuals. RIP my good friend.
