I met Norm at St. Bridget School in the Valley. Our girls were in the same class. Our wives played softball in a league at the church. Good times back then. My condolences to all the Pates.
Paula Richards says
Norm was a second dad to my son as Maggie is a mom. My deepest condolences to the Pates. Our hearts are with you.

I don’t know how I missed the death notice for Norm and was surprised and saddened to see his name in the “Grapevine.”
While I was working at 88’s Norm visited and engaged me in conversation. We found several areas of common interest. I was impressed with his depth of knowledge and interest in applying computers to the needs of the fire service.
A handful of years later, I was restricted from field duty and ended up assigned to the newly formed Hazardous Materials Section. Norm was the inspector with the Technical Services Unit. He had a deep understanding of the legislation that initiated the formation of the HM Section. He always impressed me with his knowledge of the law, and the nature of the extremely hazardous material. I always sought his advice and was very comfortable following it. I guess it was the white hair that added credibility to his opinions. He was stabilizing force within the Technical Services Unit.
I recall that he occasionally commuted from his home in Northridge riding his road bicycle. That was in the 1980s, well before bike lanes were a thing. He displayed the same passion for his role as a member of the LAFD as he did for cycling for exercise.
He was a good friend.
