Dick taught me how to drive a 1976 Thibault Engine. I wasn’t very good but Dick worked with me and got me through it.. Super nice person to work with.
My condolences to the Sorensen family.

Another great from Fire Station 10.

I was a young pump Engineer behind Dick in 1976. When I asked him if he wanted to trade positions, he said no, and that because he wouldn’t give up the wagon, he had probably caused many Enginerers to study and promote to Captain. Yep. He was right. Great guy and very respected as an Engineer and as a person.
RIP. Dick.
Jerry Bedoya says
When I got to Ten’s as a young FF, Dickie was the engineer on W10. For me, Dickie was a calming/reassuring voice of reason in the midst of a frenzied assignment and at a time when LAFD legends seemed to roam around every corner of that engine house. As an inexperienced 23yo, I marveled at Dickie’s work ethic, competence and humble persona. He always seemed to be in the right place at the right time and doing the right thing. He had garnered that EF Hutton type of respect — When Dickie talks, people listen. In addition to being a superb engineer, I truly believe Dickie was also part psychologist. Over the years, he drove a number of CI’s with dominant, Type-A personalities, but the soft-spoken Sorensen managed to tame them all. When Dickie retired in ’88, his void wasn’t just felt by the A-Shift, but the entire station as well.
RIP, Dickie, and Godspeed to the entire Sorensen family.

I had the privilege and honor of teaming with Dick at 10’s. He was one of the best men I have ever known. A great Engineer, strong family man, Gentleman, man of faith in God, and quietly a leader to all who who had the fortune to be assigned with him. May your family be at peace knowing you are eternally with the Lord.
Thanks for everything Richard, Bud Molle
