On behalf of the Board of Directors of the International Public Safety Leadership and Ethics Institute, we extend our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences to Firefighter Varnum’s family and to all members of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
May Peter find peace in his journey, may love bring comfort to his family, and may LAFD find solace in support from around the world.

Sonja Varnum Essick (Peter's mom) says
We, as Peter’s family, cannot express adequately, how blessed we have been by the support of Ventura and Los Angeles City fire departments. You loved Peter like your own brother…like your own son. We are deeply saddened and grieving, but have been greatly uplifted by all of you, knowing we do not grieve alone.
Chris Hare says
Peter was a joy to be around watching him grow up in the neighborhood and riding camp. He just started his adventure following his brother and Grandpa into the business. This is a tough loss to take affecting the LAFD and Ventura Co Fire. The support for the Varnum family by these agencies is impressive as they also grieve. With heavy heart I remember the good times with Pete that make this hard to understand. God bless the Varnums
Sonjja Varnum Essick (Peters mom) says
Thank you our friend Chris. I know you invested time and love into Pete’s life. It was so kind of you to offer a place for those who wanted to continue to be together after the service at your house. We love your family.
