RED, Thanks for all of the SOD days, especially the Holidays, it was really a lot of good times, 45 years that is a hell of an accomplishment, even for a Paratrooper. Thanks again RED. Another S/A Patch

One of the Best Brothers on the LAFD. He was Chief Jim Sander’s Aide when I first met him on my assignments after the Drill Tower. I had the honor of taking his son SCUBA Diving and catch some fish. But the best memory I have is at my second house FS 62. I was with a group of elementary kids who were sitting on the apparatus floor when that red and white sedan drove up. I told the kids that the Chief had arrived and we needed a special welcome for him. So when Chief Sanders walked in all the kids, in a most polite and respectable manner said, “Good Morning Chief Sanders!” and the Chief responded, “Good Morning children!” and walk into the front office. But as the Chief got into the office in walked Red and all the kids, on their own, yelled, “Hey RED!, Hi RED! or just RED!” and some even High Fived him all cheering that he had arrived. Without missing a step Red just said, “Hey Kids!” and walked into the office. As I looked in the office as the door swung open there was Sanders with this awe struck look on his face looking at Red…and then me! Enough Said! I miss both these Gentle souls and pray they are resting in peace.

I was an new Aide in Battalion 3 and this guy calls me and Screams into the phone ” I need the fuel totals, get on it”. I have no idea what he is talking about. I make some calls and find out he wants the fuel totals from every station in Battalion 3. I figured this must be really important until I worked a SOD day in Division on the first of the month. I got the fuel totals and then asked Norma what I do with them and she tells me to put it in the file cabinet. That’s it? LOL
Division Aide was the 2nd best job on the LAFD. Get the monthly fuel totals and drive the AC to lunch. I loved getting SOD days in Division.
    RIP Red

“Red” was one of the icons of Chief Officers aides. He really knew his job administratively and at an emergency where his skills really showed. He was a paratrooper before the LAFD and his training there certainly stayed with him even maintaining a flat top haircut. I got an opportunity to work with him in Division. A great guy. Will be missed.
