I worked at FS 22 as a rookie in the early 70’s and Capt. Nick would never let the rookies jump up and do the dishes after a meal. He said that doing the dishes right away upset his Hemoglobins. He was fun to work with, Rest in Peace Capt. Baumgartner.

My Dad, Frank Jure, commuted with Nick, Pat Tierney, Miles (Terry) McClarin, and probably Dave Hutchins, from Green Valley Lake back in March of 1968 to January of 1972. Our family had a blast living up in the San Bernardino Mts. I knew Nick when I was an 8 to 12 yrs old and My Dad and Nick were self-appointed quasi-vigilantes of GVL. BJM (Baumgartner, Jure, & Messna) Firewood was their firewood business, which created lots of memories for my brother John and I. Nick was nice to our family. My condolences to NIck’s family; Jan, Susan and Steve.

Nick and I car pooled to old Squad and Engine 23 in the late 1950s. We spent a lot of time with Nick, Jan and the kids.
Later Nick, Bill Durkee and I successfully studied together for the Engineer and Captains exams. We spent a lot of hours together.
Nick and Jan were really helpful to us during those younger years. We had a lot of good times together along with the other members of old 23s.
They will be greatly missed.
We have great memories.
