Joe was my TFC in my 1st probationary station, heavy duty task force 9.. He was a great role model and a kind and efficient task force commander. He did a great job of setting me and many other rookies on the right path for our careers on the fire department.. Over the years that I was an officer I often thought about the way he ran his fire station and later his battalion and used some of his methods I’m a in my own. He was a credit to the LAFD and one of those who’s accomplishments have helped others like me to succeed.

I am deeply saddened at the news of Joe Coaty’s passing. He was one of the Captains at Drill Tower 98 in 1968. Everything about him gave me confidence that, if I made it through the tower, I’d be a part of a very trustworthy family. He was demanding and encouraging in the same breath. How does one do that?
I have many memories of the drill tower, and the fondest, include Joe Coaty saying something or doing something. His ability to teach firefighting skills was equaled by the example he presented on how to “be LAFD.”
I do regret that I did not have the privilege to work for or alongside Joe but every day of my life I have benefitted from the things, large and small, that he .taught the class.
He has been so kind to participate in our Drill Tower Class reunions. My wife really admired him as well.
We’ll see you on the other side, Sir!
