I came on the job with Jerry. Later working with him in the FPB. I am so sad to see him gone so soon. I’ll miss his mustache and smile.

Jerry Thomas enjoyed a great debate. Whenever I saw him, he always met me with a smile. Although we were friends through the LAFD, we usually talked about our families and how life outside the Department was going. It took me a while to catch on, but regardless of what the subject of our conversation was, he would usually take the opposite position, and the debate would be on. RIP my friend!

Jerry, wherever or whenever we met, we both had the biggest smiles that reflected the warmth that we had for one another as brother firemen. Our class of 1975, I believe was the best ever. You were an inspiration to me whenever we spoke as well as for others that had the pleasure of knowing you. With respect to you and your loved ones, I Honor you to the Highest Degree. Rest in peace, Tom

I met Jerry in March of 1990 when I was assigned to FS 65 as a 3rd house rookie. Jerry was my Captain and he, Walt Duffy ( Engr) and Martin Avila (Sr FF) treated me like Gold. I believe that your view of an organization is reflected in how you are received in to that organization. My experience with Capt Thomas was almost too good to be true. He was the kind of leader that was always part of the solution, no matter the circumstance and he made learning the job fun. When he found out that I had been a track and field athlete in college, he would gather the crew in the back of 65’s and I would have to lead the the members in exercise by running wind sprints in the alley. I was crushed when I finished probation and had to transfer.
In Retirement, I always enjoyed see him holding court at our local Starbucks (La Tijera) and would always make sure to say hello. I was fortunate to be able to see him recently and tell him how much he meant to me as mentor and leader. You will be missed “Capt”. Prayers to you and family.
