I first met Gary at old 73s in 1977. Our paths would cross again at then TF102A I as an engineer and Gary as the TFC. Under Gary’s leadership,102A became one of the most desired places to work in the city. (That was evident by the number of “Brownies” on file at Div.). With Gary as the 2 and Murph as the 1 (and later on Boz), we had the best front office in the Dept.
The LAFD lost a legend, but his memory will forever be with us. Both mine and Mona’s condolences to Phil and Holly.

I worked many SOD days at 102s with Captain Peck when I was a Fireman. He was a great person to work for, and to learn from. He taught me how to be a better supervisor, when years later I was lucky enough to promote. He was a wonderful role model, along with Captain Whitson at 89s.

Gary (Pecker) and I were in charge of the “A-Team” from 1981 thru 1985 at TF 102. It was the best of the best to be working there with Gary and herding the cats. Gary was a unique individual and leader. Everyone admired and respected him as a person and leader. Our job there was made easy because of the outstanding individuals that showed up to work (and play) every “A” shift. We as Captains never needed to tell the guys what needed to be done. They were all self starters. Gary and I always agonized when we were required to move someone out to make room for a rookie, because everyone was top notch. But it seemed like every time, we got someone as good, and many times traded up. It was almost magical. I’m sure if he was asked today what made TF 102 so special, he would agree with me, that it was “The Wild Bunch” on the A shift. And, if you asked the guys why they say “It’s the best place I ever worked”, It would be because of Captain Gary Peck.
On a personal level, Gary and I have remained friends on and off the job as well as golf buddies all these years. I, as everyone that has known him will miss him and his farm stories. RTP Boz.

I had the pleasure to work at 102’s for about 8 years… Captain Gary Peck (Pecker) and Wayne Boswell (Bos), then later Doug Murphy transferred in… Gary was such a pleasure to work for, always had a great story to tell… Great on the fire ground… just a peach…Gary use to tell me, “ It’s easy being a Captain, you just have to have a great crew”…I had to disagree though, because it takes a great Captain to have a good crew…. And he was one of the best I ever worked for in my career…
Absolutely the best assignment in my 34 year career… I alway felt it an honor to work with such a talented crew on the “A” shift and Gary Peck as our Captain… We moved up all over the City and were fortunate to get in on a lot of big Fires… We would hide a painted stencil of 102’s in just about every Fire Station in the city, that we move-up to… under stoves, hose towers, under reserve apparatus, which was just comical… Daily Routine at 102’s was, line-up, volleyball, shop for meals, lunch, horseshoe for sud’s, volleyball, dinner, horseshoe’s for suds… Good fun…
Holly and Phil , Lisa and I send our condolences… I hope it is of some comfort to know the impact your Dad had on so many of us that passed through 102’s…the fortunate few, have been blessed with so many great memories of 102’s, and your Dad was a major part of that experience…God bless him…

The first time I became aware of the A Team was as a rookie assigned to FS 93 A. When we returned from a fire, it was my task to figure out how to remove the upside down bucker atop the flagpole. I won’t divulge the secret out of respect to the memory oof Gary. I never worked with Gary but our paths crossed many times over the years, usually on the golf course. As I started studying for captain, Gary would talk at great lengths over a beer at that hole in the wall bar in Newbury Park. I was Gary’s best friend or at least that is the way Gary would make everyone he met feel. I will always remember that great smile and the gentleman he was. RIP Gary.
