Duane Reese,
What a guy, what a leader, what a father, and what a friend,
I will always remember Captain Reese as a dedicated and loyal officer who took care of his crew both on and off the fire ground. I fondly remember the evenings when the call of “Corn in the Kitchen” would bring everybody back for a post dinner treat and the card playing of Engineer John Roberts and FF/PM Valerie Roberts.
It was a warm and friendly house under Captain/PM Duane Reese. If the LAFD instituted a “Father of the Year” award, Captain Reese was a prime contender.
Dan Butcher says
I met Duane at FS 11 which was my first house as a rookie. I really appreciated his help and advice as a first house rookie. He was always soft spoken and friendly and very helpful to me as I started my career. I will always appreciate and remember his kindness towards me and his willingness to share his wealth of firefighting knowledge. My condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.

We rode the tailboard together at fs 11 . First in at the Stratford hotel fire. Many saves that night. Good firefighter and partner

Rode the tailboard with him at heavy duty task force 11. We saved many lives together at the stratford hotel fire. A good partner and fine fireman.

I got to know Duane while working in Battalion 17. Talk about a great guy, and he comes to mind first. Such a big loss for all of us. We were all better with him around, someone we could all look up to.

We were in the firefighter paramedic crossover training class, firefighter to paramedic, in 1979. Opened firefighting Paramedic Engine 99 12/10/1979, then to firefighter/paramedic RA27 for another experiment. Enjoyed working with Duane. He was sensible and reasonable, patient and competent. Thanks for your support, Duane, and a pleasant few years in a difficult and politically sensitive time.
Vince Marzo says
I echo John’s sentiments exactly. Duane was a decent, kind gentleman and as competent as you could ask for as a fireman, paramedic, and fire officer. As paramedic school classmates, Duane and I sat next to each other during our didactic training. Every so often, as we would be taking a written exam, Duane would yell out for me to quit looking at his answers. Although I wasn’t, it would immediately draw the ire of the nurse instructors who would always make me change seats! Duane always got a good laugh at that. Enjoyed the many SOD days I worked with Duane as fireman paramedics at 99’s, as well the numerous SOD days when he was the skipper at 100’s. It became a regular routine for the two of us to sit in the front office of 100’s and talk the night away. I miss those times and will always miss Duane’s friendship.
Mike Littleton says
Duane was a great person who also happened to be a very competent fire officer. I worked with him in Battalion 17 when he was a captain at FS 100-B. His crew was a testament to his leadership qualities and there was never a question about his tactics or strategy on the fireground. We’ve lost one of the finest officer the LAFD has produced. My condolences to his family and friends.
