I had the pleasure of working with Don for a short time when I was sent to 69’s for “freeway therapy”. The Chief kicked me out of a firehouse where we fought fire everyday and sent me to a station that fought a couple of fires a month. Hell for me. Don was the first guy to welcome me and smooth down my feathers. He was the voice of reason in a nest of malcontents. Nicest man I ever met. One incident really stood out for me as we pulled up on a Mansion under construction. As I was throwing ladders I saw Don and the other old timers performing hose lays as if they were testing in the drill tower. The Engine Co. had a couple of 2 1/2″ deployed and were having the time of their lives. Don talked about that fire for weeks and, as with all fires, problems at the firehouse were shelved while Don and the crew basked in the glory of a job well done. He was a solid Firefighter and even a better man. It was an honor to work with him. Congratulations for a life well lived Don. Rest in peace friend.
