Lydia Andrews

Lydia AndrewsLydia AndrewsThere’s no doubt about the way volunteers bridge the gap between organizations and the community it serves, but for the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund, volunteer Lydia Andrews is more than just a link, she’s a true cheerleader.

“Lydia has an infectious smile and is always laughing and upbeat. She makes work fun and really captures the spirit of our mission,” said Marlene Casillas, Development & Marketing Director.

Whether it’s making gift baskets for a raffle, handing out t-shirts for an event, or collecting money for auction items, Lydia is right there willing to help wherever she can. No mater what is asked of her, Lydia exudes positivity and energy.

“She definitely lights up the room,” said Juliet Brandolino, Events Coordinator.

“I feel so complete; it feels so overwhelming. I love it. I feel like my work is going to something good,” said Lydia, a retiree from Time Warner Cable.

“I really appreciate what the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund does for the families that lost [their] loved ones. They don’t have their father, son or husband anymore – and it benefits them.

Lydia became involved with the Widows & Orphans through her best friend of 20 years, Valerie Lawrence. In December 2008, Valerie lost her husband, Cpt. John Lawrence (Fire Station 75). The Lawrence’s, who have been longtime volunteers for the Lane Kemper softball tournament and Benefit of Our Bravest, have made significant contributions to the Widow & Orphans Fund.

Lydia said, “I’ve been volunteering for the last three or four years – and heavily since John passed away because I have been really supportive for Val. I was with Val when we found John and it affected me in a big way.”

Since becoming a volunteer, Lydia says it’s the friendships and the brotherhood that overwhelms her.

“If something happens to one person, everyone says ‘Hey we’re here to help you.’ … when something happens with the firemen, it seems like they’re right there to help out and pitch-in and take care of you … in particular, the Los Angeles Firemen’s Relief Association” she said.

Lydia says her favorite event is the Lane Kemper softball tournament. “I love softball because I like to look at the men – I’ve been happily married for 39 years, but it doesn’t hurt to look.”

In recognition for her tremendous contributions to the Widows & Orphans Disabled Firemen’s Fund, it is with distinct pleasure to honor Lydia Andrews as Volunteer of the Month by the Los Angeles Firemen’s Relief Association.

“I volunteer my time and a lot of it … with me on the outside and not part of the fire family, as you might say, I find it so unique how we can all work together to try and raise some funds for the firemen.”
