Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen's Fund

Dedicated to helping the families of firefighters injured or killed in the line of duty.

Firefighters dedicate their lives to helping others. They rush into burning buildings… dangle from helicopters… jump into raging waters… climb into trenches… and race to the frontlines of disaster, all to protect the rest of us.

But when the unthinkable happens, where do firefighters go for help? The Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund. Founded 104 years ago by firefighters who “passed the boot” around to help an injured or fallen comrade, the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund is dedicated to helping firefighters and their families in times of crisis. Most are reluctant to ask for help, but need assistance because tragedy has left them in severe financial turmoil.

When a firefighter is killed in the line of duty, the fund helps widows pay rent, buy clothing for their children or put food on the table. It also helps disabled firefighters suffering from burns, wounds, lung problems and job-related cancers.

Many firefighters have been exposed to all sorts of harmful fumes, toxins and chemicals while simply doing their job. Several have passed away far too young, leaving spouses and children with no husband, wife, father, mother or financial provider.

Unfortunately, the standard disability and pension rates do not cover all associated costs or make up for the severe loss of pay. Additional needs faced by the entire family also are not met.

After tragedy strikes, families need a wide range of emotional support and guidance. Founded on the principals of camaraderie, brotherhood and sisterhood, the Widows Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund truly considers each person in need a member of one “firefighter family.” Whether it’s lending an ear, driving a child to school, picking up groceries, rebuilding a roof, helping fill out paperwork or dealing with insurance policies, our staff and trustees provide support from the heart.

Currently, the need of firefighter families facing crisis is greater than the contributions. Helping our valiant firefighters in times of trouble is simply not possible without your kind and generous donations.
