When Task Force 64 responded to a reported structure fire at an apartment building one block from the station, they discovered heavy smoke and fire showing from one unit of the two-story apartment building as people scrambled for safety.
Neighbors alerted Firefighter Raymond Topete (left) that there might be someone trapped inside the burning unit. He immediately notified Captain Mark Scott (right), who coordinated the fire attack and search efforts. In the intense heat of the living room, Captain Scott found an unconscious 10-year-old boy and carried him to the paramedics outside the unit.
Firefighter Topete was on a hose line when he heard a cry for help. He followed the voice despite overpowering heat and smoke and aggressive firefighting efforts going on around him. He found an 8-year-old girl cowering under the footrest of a recliner. He wrapped her in a blanket and carried her outside to the paramedics, then returned to the firefighting efforts.
There is no question that both children would have died if not for the efforts of these two firefighters. Captain Scott took immediate initiative and his proactive actions were integral to the positive outcome of this incident and Firefighter Topete displayed exceptional bravery during the operation. Because of their courageous service, two young children were saved and are alive and well today.
