Jessica ReinerJessica Reiner is the daughter of the late Eric F. Reiner, an LAFD Firefighter/Paramedic, who was tragically killed in a helicopter crash in 1998 while airlifting to the hospital a young girl who had been seriously injured in an auto accident. All three Paramedics, including the girl, died. The crash was determined to be caused by rotor failure.
Jessica applied for this scholarship in order to further her education. "I understood that with several children in my family with plans to go to college, I have a responsibility to contribute to the cost of my own education. My father had great plans for me, which included a college education. I want to honor his memory and remain active and involved with the LAFD," she said.
Jessica started her journey off to college in the Fall of 2009. As a freshman at Santa Clara University, Calif., she plans to major in psychology. Once she finishes her undergraduate work at SCU (2013), she said she plans to pursue a master's degree in psychology and work in the mental health field.
Getting to know Jessica ... Some Q & A's
What did receiving this scholarship from the Relief Association mean to you?
It was a great honor to receive this scholarship. Knowing that people have confidence in my abilities, and that they are willing to help me pursue my educational goals and dreams is a humbling reality. I feel truly blessed that I have received this generous aid.
How will this scholarship help you with your education?
This scholarship will help me pay for college tuition. I chose Santa Clarita Universityt because it seemed to offer the right combination of academic challenges and the support found in a smaller college setting. The scholarship will also assist my family in planning financially for the education of my younger siblings. I have a large family and going to an expensive university is not easy.
What advice do you have for future scholarship recipients?
My advice is that you plan and prioritize your time wisely. Have big dreams and goals and don’t give up on them when you find obstacles. Understand that your hard work in school and your willingness to apply for scholarships will lead to results.
How would you like to make a difference in this world and give back to your community?
Santa Clarita University has special programs to assist the needy and marginalized in the greater community. I am excited at the prospect of being able to volunteer my time and energy to any one of these special programs. I want to grow in awareness of the needs of others and use my developing gifts to be useful to them. I’m interested in the field of psychology and believe that I can help others through this pursuit. If I am fortunate enough to make a sound living I plan to give back by supporting students who want to pursue further education.
