Christina HenzgenChristina Henzgen is moving into the next chapter of her life at Regis University in Denver, Colorado as a double major in English and Theology. She hopes to become a youth minister or a junior high school teacher, focusing on writing, religion, or English.
As the 2010 recipient of the Bill Goss Scholarship Award, Christina said, "this scholarship affirmed my writing skills and helped towards my room and board at school. I like knowing I was able to help pay for some of my college expenses."
When Christina learned about the scholarship opportunity through the Firemen's Grapevine, she felt eager to apply since she's the daughter of a LA City firefighter. She also thought it would mean a lot to her father. Christina says she'll never forget the day she won. "I was so excited...when I got the call from my dad, it made me so happy that he was so happy - and that I had succeeded in writing a winning essay!"
Christina also plays volleyball at Regis.
Q & A
What did receiving a scholarship through the LA Firemen's Relief Association mean to you?
I was honored to receive a scholarship. I have always been very proud of the fact that my dad is a firefighter and in winning the scholarship I felt a special, personal connection with the fire department.
What are some personal words of advice that you would give to future scholarship applicants/recipients?
In writing your essay, write from your heart and use personal experience to prove your points. In writing a personal essay I found it easier and more effective to write about what I was passionate about.
How will receiving this scholarship help you to make a difference through your education and in the community?
I will be earning a degree that will allow me to either teach at the junior high level or open me up to service opportunities where I can dedicate my life to helping other people. This may be through teaching, traveling, or maybe even starting my own organization. I hope to give back to the community in any way that I can.
What is your ultimate career goal, and how does receiving this scholarship help you to accomplish that goal?
The scholarship, again, is towards my education at a Catholic school which will open up opportunities for me to go out and participate in service activities around the community and beyond. These experiences will open up connections and inspire future work I may be interested in as far as service work and organizations are concerned.
