Why should you become a member of the Los Angeles Firemen’s Relief Association?
Why should you become a member of the Los Angeles Firemen’s Relief Association?
We offer a wide-range of benefits to our members. Think of the Los Angeles Firemen's Relief Association as a “Full-Service Organization” available at your fingertips when you or a family member are in need.
First, the Relief Fund provides compensation for members who become sick or injured in a situation not connected to normal duty (NIOD). Secondly, we also provide a Death Benefit to members up to $4,500 to a designated beneficiary and up to $600 reimbursement for writing a Will and/or Living Trust.
In addition, we offer a Life & Accident Insurance Fund, a self-funded PPO LAFRA Fire Medical Plan, an HMO (Kaiser) Plan, and the Widows, Orphans and Disabled Firemen’s Fund for times of financial hardships. We have assisted many families over the last 104 years; most dealing with some of the toughest tragedies that a member may suddenly face in a life time — death or a permanent disabling injury to a loved one.
Below are the membership requirements of which you may read the details in the By-Laws:
First and foremost, understand that regular Department Appointments, meaning individuals who are regularly appointed to the Fire Department, must apply for membership within five (5) years from the date of such appointment. If you do not apply before this set time frame, you forfeit the opportunity to become a Relief member.
For the purpose of affording and continuing LAFRA Fire Medical Coverage, newly appointed Firefighter trainees while assigned to the Recruit Training Academy, will be offered an Associate Membership to the Relief Association. Within 90 days of graduation from the Drill Tower, the newly sworn Fire Department member must join the Relief Association or their LAFRA Fire Medical Coverage will be terminated.
Only members of the Fire Department of the uniform rank, who have received regular appointment as a Firefighter under Civil Service rules and regulations, and members of another city or district Fire Department of the uniform rank absorbed into or merged with the Fire Department pursuant to Section 122 of the Los Angeles City Charter, shall be eligible for membership in the Association.
