Special Thanks to Engineer Ray Mayo

It started out as four guys, a few sandwiches and a little beer. Eighteen years later, it’s become a full-fledged, firefighters’ surf fest that raises thousands of dollars for the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firemen’s Fund.
Held each year in San Onofre along a stretch of beach known as the “Old Man” area, the event has become known as “the largest board meeting on the West Coast.”
There are no contests and no RSVPs required. Everyone just shows up, surfs, eats, gets a t-shirt and has a great time.
Firefighters from L.A. City, LA County, Santa Ana and Beverly Hills always attend and all departments are welcome.
Organizer Ray Mayo says it’s a great gathering for the whole family and retired firefighters too. Thanks to donations from several sponsors, the event includes a charity raffle and winners go home with everything from sunglasses to surf wear to surf boards.
Mayo says it’s a wonderful way to remember the firefighters we lost, including his dear friend, Harry Correll and the late Juan Ojeda, who was one of the founding four firefighters that started this great event.
